insane in the brain
I could be concerned when my husband says our child vaguely resembles a caterpillar (the hair), but instead, I simply agree: Happy New Year’s Eve, people! For those of you going out to revel in debauchery, be safe. For those of you staying in your home or that of a friend, have fun! To celebrate, I organized some of my favorite posts from 2009: January: a year in the life February: 26...

yoga moga coga doga, yoga!
Whenever you think you’re having a bad day, just remember that you could be a little Neopets monkey character, and a teething 9 month old could be feasting on your skull and/or tail (Jasper is OBSESSED with tags! Sean said we should get a blanket and sew a bunch of tags on it and let him at it) day long. A very anguished, teething 9 month old. I have recently started exercising. Wait,...

my other job
So! As some of you might know, I’m a photographer. This sentence, in an of itself, trips me out, because I’ve only recently become comfortable telling people that. Sean, on the other hand, has been telling people I’m a photographer for forever. This has been simultaneously awesome and nerve-wracking. Awesome because I love this job. Nerve-wracking because then people want to talk...

coffee infusion, and GO!
Some days I arrive at blogger.com have absolutely nothing to say. These are the days I usually throw up a photo or two of the smoosh, tell you how cute he is, and go about my way. Or the days where I don’t say anything at all. Other days? I wake UP ready to blog, and have at least fifteen things I want to talk about, and no idea how to do so. Here are things I’d like to share today:...

Month Nine.
Dear Jasper, Today you are nine months old. Nine. Number nine. Number niiiine. Niiiine. Number nine, number nine. I think this is brilliant. You know how I celebrated? I ate 85% dark chocolate, and it was amazing. I really hope you enjoyed it when the fat passed to you via breast milk, because I loved it. Anyway. Today I had TWO photo sessions, so you rocked the casa with your dad. I know I...

how the kalois rocked christmas after all
We hung stockings yesterday—the three of us used various fuzzy socks, and Kali used a toy Sean made a year or so ago out of a bunch of his old socks. Kali’s stocking had three treats, all of which she got to eat at the same time. Jasper’s stocking had a baby food jar full of organic vegetable puffs, of which three probably made it into his mouth, and mine and Sean’s had...

videos videos sha-la-la
I found a whole bunch of videos that we recorded of Jasper in the NICU and beyond, and also this gem: pregnoid from stephanie kaloi on Vimeo. That was recorded on Wednesday, the 25th of March 2009, around 2 in the morning. I woke up with a twinge in my stomach, and decided to eat carrot sticks with Paul Newman’s caesar dressing and rice crackers. Had Sean continued to film, you would see me...
I'm sleepy, so here's what's happening.
We went to Jasper’s allergist today, and found out, via skin testing, that he’s not allergic to any foods so far. This is a big relief, but they still want to double-check the bananas and pineapple, since he’s reacted to those before. They’ll do this via blood, since the skin test is with food that is essentially cooked, and the blood test will be checked against raw...

a fit? a tantrum? a moment of despair?
Jasper has moved into the time of his life called I-cry-when-you-take-things-away-from-me, and OH MY GOSH. I really didn’t think this was happening yet, I though it happened with two year olds, and since we don’t want him to grow up to be the type of teen-ager or adult even who does incredibly ridiculous and/or immature things because of they’re just that used to getting...

we don't really do Christmas that well.
Sean and I are pretty bad at holidays. I’ll rephrase that—we rock the holidays that don’t have pressure associated with them. The ones that society doesn’t tout as the best, which also happen to be the ones that you’re expected to buy lots of presents on. Capitalism rocks! Anyway—birthdays? Yes, we are supreme leaders of the birthday celebrators, because we bake...

OMGOMGOMG
This…might be the best email I’ve ever received, at least from Twitter, and it definitely ranks in the top five best emails, ever. Seriously, I’m not even sure what else to say. I. LOVE. HER. I think I was going to talk about yesterday’s post some more, but now I don’t remember what I was going to say. At all.

do I o-ffffennnd?
Sean and I are definitely not the type of parents who match the clothes on their kid. We don’t intentionally NOT match his clothes, but we don’t intentionally do it either. Sometimes he matches, and sometimes he doesn’t. I don’t have anything against matching really, other than I never quite got the hang of it growing up, more or less because I didn’t care—I...

is it too late to start celebrating chrismukkah?...
I have a friend who works at the Refugee Resettlement Program in Alabama. If you’re curious, most of their refugees come from Iraq, Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Vietnam, Cuba and Russia. Anyway, she’s organized a group on Facebook, and sent out the following message: Hi Everyone! I hope you are all having a very merry Christmas season! I am pleased to tell you that we have been VERY...
Today is an awesome day to be a parent
So far today, I’ve been pooped on, peed on, drooled (to an excessive degree) on, had to clean out a certain someone’s nose more times than I can count (seriously, can we invent something that does this quickly and doesn’t cause the baby to scream?), and had applesauce, breast milk, drool, snot, AND grape-flavored iron spat at me. AWESOME.

waaaaaaa-aaave?
Yesterday Jasper made his first real crawling movements. I (kindofnotreallybecauseI’vealreadytoldpeopleitis) hesitate to call this crawling, and Sean says it doesn’t count until he can go go go full steam ahead (!), but I think this was it. He moved one leg and arm up, and then the other, and then the first pair again, and he gained ground. CRAWLING! I think. Jasper is congested again...

I don't even know what to call this
So, a few weeks ago I watched Food, Inc. for the first time. I’ve been trying to figure out a great way to work it into a blog post, but I think the vastness of the topic at hand is too much for me to adequately describe. I’ll go ahead and say this: it made me incredibly glad that we are a vegetarians. The movie isn’t pro-vegetarian and doesn’t have some kind of vegetarian...

boy, one day you'll be a man
Oh gosh, last night a small part of my heart broke. I was talking about something random to Sean, and then noted that it’ll be really sad when Jasper is like 7 or 8 and decides that I’m not his favorite person anymore. You know, whenever he gets to that age where all of the sudden his friends are really cool and they talk about all the really cool, important things, and I’m just...

who knew it'd be such a sad book?
The scene: Three Kalois lie in a bed. Kali is sulking in the corner, since she’s jealous of Jasper and his attention and won’t sleep with us anymore. Whatever. Jasper is already asleep. I’m in between Sean and Jasper, getting ready to go to sleep, when Sean offers to read me something out of the book he’s reading. Sean: *Reads really, really sad passage* Me: “Nooo!...

happyhappyhappy birthdaaaaaaaaay & such.
Last night Sean was chilling with Jasper, and they were playing in our room, so I was all “Ok! Great! I’ll get some editing done!” and then I heard little sounds and giggles and whathaveyous, and decided to go inspect the bedroom to see what they were up to. I was just going to spy and then go back to the computer, but when I went back there, they were sitting on the bed,...

Object permanence. Heavy.
Jasper is going through an intensely clingy time in his life. I don’t even like the word clingy, because it implies that this is something negative, something we should try to change. So. Let’s start over. Right now, Jasper really, really likes to be with me. A whooooole bunch. Don’t misinterpret me—he absolutely adores Sean. Yesterday, he kept watching Kali to see when...
THE BABIES ARE COMING
OH MY GOSH. April 16, 2010! I had something else to say, but then Brooke posted this on her blog, and I am following suit. I plan to get together with all the people I know who have small children and go see it and have some kind of baby extravaganza. Jasper loves it, he smiles and laughs. And he just held my hand. And wow, I’m emotional now.

Sean: “Do you think if you write Santa Claus and ask him for the body of—” Me: “Sean, Santa Claus isn’t real.” Sean: “Yeah, but do you think—” Me: “Sean, this is a moot point.” Sean: “Ok, but hypothetically, if you had been really good all year and wrote Santa Claus and asked him for the body of an elf, do you think he would...
Holiday 2009
Santa is taking a hiatus this year from his yearly chimney to chimney jaunt saying, “It’s so crowded down there. With hoards in stores raving about discounts and my music themes having worn themselves out since Thanksgiving (or was it Halloween?). I think I would rather take a moment to wish you all love, peace, tolerance and compassion.” And I wish to do the same . Robert...

like King Kong, but with Star Wars
NOM NOM. We just watched The Namesake, which I wanted to see like three or four years ago when it came out, and I am soooo glad we did. What do you call people obsessed with India? Because I know people obsessed with England are Anglophiles, and people obsessed with France are Francophiles (spelling?), so am I…a…Indiophile? Or something. I also liked it because the dad gave the son a...
snow day!
How I spent my morning: being sick, drinking coffee, listening to music, letting Sean cater to my sick self, cuddling with Jasper (who slept until 7:15, WHAT UP!), eating muffins, and watching loves play in the snow. And then? Then I went to take photos with Ashley, who is also sick, and our first session of the day was basically a wash because it was way too cold for the kids. Blah. But! Then we...

he is basically confounding to modern medicine
Bah! So all of Jasper’s counts came back more or less the same as they were last month. They’re theorizing that he may indeed have ITP, or Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura. From what I have gleaned, this basically translates into low platelets (the T) and red and purple spots (P) from an unknown origion (I). This could actually be what he’s had the whole time, instead of NAIT,...

did you know babies can type?
Or, at least, they really, really try to when you’re holding one in your lap and updating your blog? But I think it’s really because he wants to eat the keys, because he just launched himself sideways on my arm in an attempt to eat my arm. And is now eating his fingers and singing/moaning/wailing/making fart sounds to himself. You know what words I hate? Hematologist and petechiae....

baby, baby
Ashley and I are going to do a maternity session today with a friend/client. She’s due in March, and we’re actually going to shoot her birth as well. Up until yesterday I hadn’t given this too much thought, other than to mention that if she goes into labor on Jasper’s birthday I obviously won’t be able to shoot it, but last night we were all emailing ideas back and...

scattered. weaning a 12 month old. help? internet....
I’m so over parenting websites(/books, but I’m mostly digital with my parenting info, y’all). You know what I’ve discovered? The Internet(/books) cannot diagnose your child. The Internet/books can, at best, under the most ideal circumstances known to humankind, give you a few hints that MIGHT help out with whatever is going on with your child. But the Internet/books...
