Today has been an awesome day

We’ll start from the beginning!

YESTERDAY, Ariel mentioned on Facebook that someone from the Today show had contacted her and planned to plug Offbeat Mama on the show. This was all in reference to the story about Storm and gender-neutral parenting, something we talk about ALLTHETIME (seriously), so it was both interesting and amusing. I didn’t really know what to expect, but Ariel said it would be one of two things: either they would cancel the segment, or they’d feature it and there would be a small spike in traffic. WELL, the folks at the Today show went with the latter, and you can watch the segment here — they drop the site around 2:20. We did have a spike in traffic, but it wasn’t gigantic. Nevertheless, it was just really exciting, because I’ve never been involved in anything like that in any way.

TODAY, someone let us know (also on Facebook) that Offbeat Mama was number five on a list of 6 Excellent Small Business Websites to Learn From on Mashable. I’ll be the first to say that I’m not familiar with Mashable, and this may not really be that big of a deal, but I was very stoked that they specifically pointed out that we create content that sparks conversation, because that’s obviously a huge part of what I do. My job IS the content — editing it, creating it,  talking and thinking about it, trying to predict what will and won’t work, what will and won’t start drama, avoiding drama, etc. SO, in short, this site pointing out that they think Offbeat Mama creates content that sparks content and that we do it WELL was like.. a digital hug. THANKS FOR THE HUGS, ERICA SWALLOW.

My non-Offbeat Mama life has also been stellar, particularly the last three or so hours. One of my favorite things about Sean’s job at his university is that we get to do all of these fairly random and very fun things — we’ve played Super Mario on a gigantic, theater-sized screen (and pretended to be the characters by physically jumping and dodging while the other one plays). He has brought home projectors that we’ve used to watch Planet Earth on a wall in our house — this especially tripped out Jasper when he was younger, and probably would if we did it again. Today, he was working the A/V for a preschool graduation. Jasper was VERY EXCITED to be at a show, and clapped and danced while the kids sang their songs. After everyone left, Sean turned on a microphone and the lights, and Jasper sang along to “Hakuna Matata” (this mostly consists of Jasper saying “ya ya ya ya TATATA yaaaa oooh ooh ah ah TATATA”). It was one of those deliriously delectable parent moments that you want to imprint in your mind for all of eternity. Hopefully I did.
