Window portraiting
If anyone notices the Flickr widget on the right-hand side of the screen, you’ll probably start seeing a lot of photos of windows and mirrors. Sometimes I’ll be very obviously in them, and other times it will be less obvious. Anyway, what started off as a way to entertain myself at sessions and weddings has turned into a very easy, very awesome self-portraiture project that I plan on cultivating for a while to come.

I have dabbled in self-portraiture for years now (there are more in the yearly sets: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010)— it was something I stopped doing once I had Jasper because self-portraits take a certain amount of TIME that I was no longer able/willing to give. I started finding that if I had an idea, I had a hard time finding a huge block of time required to pull it off. If I had time, I usually didn’t have ideas.

I love this window/reflective surfaces idea so much — mostly because it’s easy, fast, and can be done just about anywhere. So far, the locations have included a gigantic outdoor flea market in central Alabama, an elevator in a Marriott, and downtown in some lawyer’s office building’s window.

I’m glad that I already know I’m traveling this year — I don’t think the location has to change a lot with your photos, but I really like that it gives people a glimpse into your world without being overtly “look at me” about it. You can be as obvious or not obvious as you feel like being. I think traveling will make this more fun for me personally.

I don’t think these photos are particularly deep, and I’m not going for any one kind of aesthetic — some of the time I’m not even paying attention to the shot at all. It’s just something that I’m doing, and I thought it’d be fun to share and invite others to do the same. I’m tagging all of my shots with “window portraits” — I briefly considered starting a group on Flickr for them, but honestly…I don’t want to maintain it. So if you do it, leave me a link with your Flickr name and tag your photos with “window portraits” and I’ll follow along. Here’s my set!
