Your hair is so great; I say “thank you”
I have this pretty intense love-hate relationship with where I live. The short version is that I love it because it’s where the people that I love are. I love the weather (except tornadoes) because I prefer heat over cold. I love the seasons (except allergy time) because we fully experience all four of them. I love that people are generally pretty nice, that they’ll wave at you and say hello (usually). I love that it’s kid-friendly and there’s plenty to do that will entertain Jasper.
I do not love the physical location of the place where I live. I don’t love how racism runs rampant, and how the southern United States appears to breed more conspiracy theorists than I’ve ever met in my life. I don’t love the truly ignorant and backwards things that happen here. I don’t love the lack of acceptance of alternative lifestyles (and I’m talking about everything from as mild as riding a bicycle to as out there as…whatever you can imagine). I don’t love that the education system is miserable.
I do truly appreciate where I am because it’s not a bad place to be, and I get that. It’s not the best, it’s not my ideal, and I can list eighty-five thousand places that are better, but I also know that they’re better in theory. Every place has its positives and negatives, ups and downs, pluses and minuses.
I took a walk a few days ago after a photo session. It was short, like ten minutes on the way to meet Sean and Jasper downtown, but it was so incredibly lovely. The city was totally sleepy — it was both Sunday and the evening before a holiday — so I barely passed anyone. I mostly observed my surroundings and enjoyed the sticky heat.
It was awesome.
