Melancholia & a French quest

I saw the trailer for Melancholia a few weeks ago and promptly fell over sideways. I’m not sure which cinema GOD or GODDESS decided that Charlotte Gainsbourg and Kirsten Dunst (aka my GIRLS) would be perfect cinematic sisters set in an end-of-the-world flick, but I am ever so thankful to him or her. This, friends, is the kind of film you cross state lines for (especially if you live in Alabama and… you have to cross state lines to see any movie worth seeing):

Speaking of Ms. Gainsbourg, this brings me to a topic I’ve been talking about a lot lately: my secret desire to be a Frenchwoman. Nevermind that I’m American and will probably never (I mean, should I say never? Let’s just say it’s REALLY unlikely at this point in my life) live in France. I don’t necessarily mean that I want to be French as much as I mean… I want to appear to be French. Basically, what it comes down to is my secret style desire is to dress like a super classy French lady, but my very loud and colorful American style keeps me from doing so. Every time I wear something classic and relatively understated, I end up pairing it with crazy tights or some kind of insane shoes and… I just can’t help myself. I’m always reminded of this every time Charlotte Gainsbourg does something new, as she’s totally my French Inspiration:

Sigh. TEACH ME YOUR WAYS.

there’s so many people to see

You know why this time of year is AWESOME?  MOVIES.

Not Santa, not holidays, MOVIES. It’s the last mad dash for the Oscar nominations, and the best films of the year almost always come out between October & December.

For example, Blue Valentine (Dec. 31, 2010):

and Barney’s Version (Dec. 31):

I LOVE REAL MOVIES. Not pretend teen-age-drama movies, though I love those also, but real cinematic experiences.

Speaking of, we recently half-showed Jasper the movie E.T. I realize what I’m about to say is silly, but this was/is a HUGE deal for me. Most people I know recall that they were terrified of E.T. the first time they saw it. I have no idea what my reaction was, because I can’t remember, but I do remember seeing it at a relatively young age and loving it. The love continued, forever and ever, all the way to the present. I have been hesitant to show it to Jasper because even if we skip all the scary government-men-chasing-E.T.-in-the-woods and show him the new version that has the guns removed (totally approve), E.T. still makes an awful lot of high-pitched weird sounds, and Jasper is an incredibly sensitive kid (he doesn’t mind loud sounds, but he doesn’t like anything that sounds like crying/pain). So, he saw a few minutes (mostly the scene in the bathtub that was added to the newer version), which he enjoyed, but I cut it off before E.T. meets Mike, thus avoiding any potential meltdowns.

I think we’ll wait until he’s like four for that one.

So now that Jasper isn’t nursing, he sleeps a LOT better at night. He still fusses around, but this is usually after we in bed and he discovers that he can roll around in every single direction like he does when we’re not there. Anyway, this whole weaning business means, among other things, that Sean and I have lots and lots of time together while Jasper is sleeping.

It used to be that we’d have 1 1/2 hours, tops, before Jasper would make some kind of sound that requires us to to check on him. Now Jasper easily sleeps 5 or so hours in a stretch (unless a tooth is cutting through) and we’re WATCHING MOVIES.

For real. Actual discs, not streaming them from various websites. We cut our Netflix down to 11 and are going to add more—but honestly, if it wasn’t for the watch instantly availability of Avatar (the last airbender), we’d probably cancel it. HOWEVER, since we do still have Netflix, we watched the OTHER Avatar (the James Cameron one) the other night.

For about 20 minutes.

I’ve heard that it’s good, and I’m sure it would have been, but why why why must it be so violent and “take that, bitch!” all the time? I mean, I guess that was setting it up for some big transformation that the main guy undergoes (like falling in love with one of the blue people—sorry, I have no idea what they’re called because I only watched 20 minutes—and then being all mellow and chill perhaps? I don’t know?), but I thought it was unnecessary. I can handle (some) violence and (copious amounts of) cursing with the best of them, but I did not enjoy that.

So last night we started Inglorious Basterds, which is infinitely more interesting, but also even more graphic. I wasn’t even sure that I could watch it in the first place, because every time I watch a Quentin Tarantino film I only make it about 15 minutes through because OMG the blood, but I managed to get through the first half of this one mostly because I am a nut about WW2 films because I am weird like that. We’re going to finish it tonight, I think.
